Titan Times 2018 – Clean Energy, Large Projects, Company Expansion

In its Titan Times 2018 Year in Review magazine, Titan Environmental delivers a strong account of geosynthetic growth for its company and the geotechnical field in general. The increasing scale of projects, the furthering of material technology (e.g., concrete reinforcement geogrids), and the opening of new facilities tell a story of a very active company and of how the civil engineering community has continued to learn more about and incorporate polymeric solutions in infrastructure.

TITAN TIMES 2018 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Channel Lining at BC Hydro’s ‘Site C’ Clean Energy Project – For the construction of an 1,100 MW hydroelectric dam on the Peace River, Titan is lining a two-kilometer diversion channel with bituminous geomembrane. The channel provides a by-pass to the damn and will be used for maintenance work or during high flow periods. Teranap BGM, a high performance elastomeric bituminous geomembrane, has been selected. The material combines SBS polymer and high-quality asphalt for puncture resistance.
  • “Waterblocking” Solution for Outfall Pipe Project – A contractor needed to hold back river water and blast local bedrock on the riverbank in order to install a water treatment plant outfall pipe. The project took place along the Winnipeg River. Titan supplied its WaterBloc solution, which is a deployable tube-like product made of industrial grade PVC. The system is filled with the water one is working against. For this project, 13 tubes were used as the dike/cofferdam protection for the site.
  • Largest ARMORMAX® Installation in Canada – Titan worked with Stantec on the Reinland Drain Erosion Remediation project. The large municipal drainage channel manages intermittent water flow from regional spring melt/breakup and peak discharge events. Riprap had failed steadily over 75 years of use from heavy run-off flows.. To resolve it, the team implemented Canada’s largest installation of the ARMORMAX® Engineered Earth Armoring System.  Read about the project’s use of rock-filled gabion baskets on the base floor of the channel and installation of 38,000 m2 of turf reinforcement mats on the slopes.

  • Maximizing Land Development – A private developer faced space constraints at a residential site. A traditional stormwater pond could not be used. Titan worked with the developer to add a StormTech® underground stormwater chamber system.
  • Geogrid Updates – Sam Bhat, the company’s VP Global Business Development and CTO Geosynthetics, adds a column. He notes some of Titan’s notable achievements in reinforcement products in 2018, including a couple items previously revealed on Geosynthetica: a strong showing in an international market report and a the performance of concrete reinforcement geogrids.
  • Additionally, the newsletter lists new employees, notes the addition of more installation crews, notes technical papers prepared by the company in 2018, shares an R&D update, and announces a 2019 seminar series.
