Reinforcement design for construction of cover soil over soft sludge

This paper presents a design procedure for selecting the reinforcement tensile strength and strain that are required for the construction of cover soils over soft low-permeability sludge using the ?finger fill soil placement technique?, which consists in placing a high-strength reinforcement over the soft, low-permeability sludge and building parallel narrow berms over the reinforcement. The design procedure described in this paper: (1) considers the proposed construction sequence; (2) takes advantage of the ability of the high-strength reinforcement to withstand tensile stresses; and (3) considers the large vertical displacement due to the applied load. The proposed design procedure allows the design engineer to select the reinforcement characteristics as well as the initial berm thickness and spacing.
