Kerry Rowe to Deliver Croce Lecture in Rome

Renowned geotechnical engineering professor Kerry Rowe (Queen’s University, Canada) has been selected to deliver the prestigious Croce Lecture at the Italian Geotechnical Society (Associazione Geotecnica Italiana – AGI) annual conference. The society, which include the Italian Chapter of the IGS, will hold its event 13 December 2017 in Rome.

Prof. Rowe has announced his lecture topic: “Environmental Geotechnics: Looking Back, Looking Forward.”

CROCE LECTURE AWARD

Since 2000, the AGI has dedicated its annual gathering to the memory of the late Professor Arrigo Croce, who was the first professor of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in Italy, President of the AGI, vice-President for Europe of the ISSMGE, and co-founder of the Technical Committee devoted to the Geotechnical Aspects of Preservation of Historic Sites.

The first conference’s honorary lecture was delivered by Prof. Carlo Viggiani, followed by Prof. Michele Jamiolkowski, Prof. Ruggiero Jappelli, Prof. Giovanni Calabresi, Prof. Giovanni Barla, Prof. Beniamino D’Elia, Prof. Giuseppe Ricceri, Prof. Luciano Picarelli, Prof. Alberto Burghignoli, Prof. Eduardo Alonso, Prof. Renato Lancellotta, Prof. Kenichi Soga, Prof. Leonardo Cascini, Prof. Sarah Springman and Prof. Claudio Scavia.

Printed versions of these sought-after presentations were published in the Rivista Italiana di Geotecnica, a journal that was also founded by Prof. Croce. These papers can now be downloaded from the AGI website’s Croce Lecture information page (save for the three most recent lectures which have yet to be added).

Since 2011, the AGI’s leadership has opened the Croce Lecture to more international contributors—those who demonstrate extremely high qualifications in Soil Mechanics, Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. These non-Italy-based contributors have included Prof. Eduardo Alonso, Prof. Kenichi Soga, and by Prof. Sarah Springman.

In 2017, it is Prof. Kerry Rowe’s turn. Rowe has achieved an extraordinary number of accolades in his career, including election to the National Academy of Engineering in 2016. Beyond his research at Queen’s University in Canada, he has also been one of the most respected geotechnical engineering journal editors in the world.

Geosynthetica congratulates him on the Croce Lecture award.

The Conference is scheduled for Wednesday, 13 December 2017 in Rome, at 10:30 am in the Auditorium Antonianum – Viale Manzoni 1, Rome – Italy.

AGI notes that the conference (and the light buffet) are free of charge and that all international members of the International Geosynthetics Society are welcomed. For those able to attend, the conference asks that you fill-in the registration form by December 11 and send it by e-mail to the Secretariat of the Italian Geotechnical Society (agi@associazionegeotecnica.it).
