On Wednesday, June 15, Profile Products and ACF West will present a high-quality seminar in Seattle: Five Fundamentals for Successful Land Rehabilitation Projects. Experts in agronomy, erosion control, and application of land rehabilitation materials will present on soil testing, vegetation species selection, erosion control selection, proper installation, and inspection and maintenance.
Additional topics of note include stormwater management, permeable pavement, low-impact development (LID), and modular stormwater detention/retention.
Attendees will be eligible to receive 4 – 5 PDHs. Cost of attendance is $20 and includes breakfast and lunch.

Successful rehabilitation of massive soil and vegetation disturbances requires a comprehensive and holistic approach. Those overseeing rehabilitation efforts must integrate and stage several considerations into a functional and seamless process that entails proper planning and execution. “Soil poor” sites offer considerable challenges when topsoil sources are scarce. This seminar will discuss what we call “The Five Fundamentals of Successful Land Rehabilitation.” Each of the fundamentals is intricately interrelated and failure to adequately address and properly execute on any one fundamental can jeopardize the success of a project.
Once soil and agronomic considerations have been addressed, it is appropriate to begin analyzing site conditions or characteristics to assess necessary erosion and sediment control measures. Site conditions, such as climatic or environmental conditions, access, distance to a reliable water source, slope lengths, gradients and aspects, ditch and channel flow hydraulics, pond and stream banks, wetlands and more must examined and proper controls selected.
Proper installation practices are critical to the success of a rehabilitation program. Detailed guidelines and details must be developed and combined with onsite supervision to assure proper installation. Failure to insure proper installation is one of the leading causes of erosion control failures. The inspector should be accredited and fully trained on the techniques being employed and capable of directing the installers on proper installation methods.
Finally, once rehabilitation measures have been installed all active sites should be routinely inspected on a regular basis and maintained after each significant precipitation or other potentially damaging climatic event. In this case, the inspector should be aware of corrective actions should the erosion control installation be damaged or otherwise compromised.
Our seminar will examine each of the Five Fundamentals and offer case histories where they have been successfully integrated in reclamation projects. In addition, we will provide an overview of a software program we have developed to facilitate execution and implementation of the five fundamental practices as well as provide some of the most recent stormwater BMP’s.0
