D35 Work Item on Long-Term Connection Strength

ASTM Committee D35 on Geosynthetics has announced work item WK36264, "Test Method for Determining Long-Term Connection Strength Displacement (Creep) Between Geosynthetic Reinforcement and Segmental Concrete Units (Modular Concrete Blocks)." This is a performance test used to determine properties for design of retaining wall systems utilizing segmental concrete units and soil reinforcing geosynthetics, either geotextiles or geogrids. The test is performed on a full-scale construction of the connection and may be run in a laboratory or the field. ID:

IECA to Celebrate 40 Years of Erosion Control Success at EC12

In honor of this achievement, the association is holding a "birthday bash extravaganza" on February 29 during its annual Environmental Connection conference. A Better Way for the Beltway

In an article in Geosynthetics magazine, Maccaferri's Alan Dinges profiles the Interstate-95/495 Capital Beltway upgrade near Washington, D.C. The 24 lane-miles of road required 321,000 yards of paving, 11 bridges, drainage improvements, retaining and noise-abatement walls, and environmental mitigation. Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) Guaranteed Loan and Grant Funding Available

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is seeking applications to provide assistance to agricultural producers and rural small businesses to complete a variety of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects, such as anaerobic digester projects. Funding is being made available through the USDA's Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) authorized by the 2008 Farm Bill. REAP is designed to help agricultural producers and rural small businesses reduce energy costs and consumption and help meet the nation’s energy needs. For 2012, USDA has approximately $25.4 million budget authority available to fund REAP activities, which will support at least $12.5 million in grants and approximately $48.5 million for the guaranteed loan program. SPE Names Willem De Vos as Its New Chief Executive Officer

The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) has appointed Willem (Wim) De Vos as its new Chief Executive Officer. He succeeds Susan Oderwald, who left SPE in December. Willem De Vos comes to SPE after serving as CEO of the Vitalo Group, a global supplier of plastic packaging and thermoformed products. Previously he managed compounding and processing units of Recticel, an international producer of polyurethane automotive components. He entered the industry in 1991 with technical and sales positions at Eurocompound, a supplier to the textile and automotive industries. ID:
