California Levees Need $500 Million
08/31/2010
Many levees in California are in need of repair, according to experts. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger pledged $500 million to upgrade the state's levee system, but the Army Corps of Engineers -- which is busy in Afghanistan -- is needed to fix most of the levees, an official said. Without repairs, a levee failure in the Sacramento area could hamper the ability of 25 million Californians to secure fresh water, experts noted.   ID: 5547

CNN's iReport on Geomembranes in Pakistan
08/25/2010
International news network CNN has published an iReport on water preservation in Pakistan with the help of geomembrane containment technology. The story takes a peek at work performed by the Sukaarr Foundation Trust (SFT), an organization that has launched rainwater harvesting projects in Pakistan. The SFT is a non-governmental organization and has used geomembranes in the creation of lined ponds to halt the problematic seepage that has characterized and plagued so many community water sources.   ID: 5516

Next GMA Lobby Days
08/03/2010
The Geosynthetic Materials Association (GMA) is planning the next Lobby Days in Washington, D.C. on September 14 and 15. This follows years of critical discussions that helped lead to the EPA's recent rules proposal for liners in coal ash storage. GMA executive director Andrew Aho notes that "GMA is making its final push for support of our position on the EPA coal ash disposal rules. When adopted, the rules could mean $350 million for the geosynthetics industry over the next 5 years. Also, the Transportation Re-authorization Bill, expected to exceed $375 billion, is in the works. This bill could represent more that $100 million for geosynthetics. GMA will be seeking the funding of a geosynthetic separation study: "Quantifying life cycle cost-benefits of pavements incorporating geotextile separators" in the Transportation Re-authorization Bill. For more information on participating, visit GMA's home page.   ID: 5481

Gujarat, India: Lining minor canals necessary to prevent seepage
07/29/2010
The canal irrigation system in the Indian state of Gujarat loses roughly half of the water it carries because its smaller canals do not have linings, a study has revealed. Research was conducted by the Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT). Recent breaches of canals under construction have revealed the difficult soil situation and how quickly erosion and scour can undermine an embankment in the Gujarat system.   ID: 5447
