The field of geosynthetics involves some of the most rigorous testing of materials. Because the materials have very specific functions for which they are designed, they must be specified precisely for use--precision beyond simple function designation (such as containment). It also must take into account the particular geosynthetic's characteristics, as supported by all that testing.
The web is now becoming the fastest way for specifiers of geosynthetics to access data, narrow down choices, and identify the products they can use.
Coming about this data is relatively easy: visit any manufacturers website and you should find technical data. But, historically, coming upon sources that publish data in a comparative format so that one can view many options is not as easy.
Capitalizing on the faster, more global reach of the web, geosIndex.com is an easy-to-use index of geosynthetic material data designed to assist designers, specifiers and other professionals in their site materials selection process. GeosIndex includes data for all major classes of geosynthetics, such as geomembranes, geogrids, geotextiles and geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs). Data is also available for drainage geocomposites, geocells, and permanent and temporary rolled erosion control products (RECPs).
With its online format, the data can be updated year-round, and errors in transcription or changes in manufacturer data can be updated immediately. This certainly facilitates better more accurate communication between suppliers and users.
GeosIndex is freely accessible and never requires user registration. Users may sort product data by key values such as drainage composite flow rate, geotextile tensile strength, and RECP longevity. The site is being developed to incorporate ASTM, CEN, and ISO data so that it may serve as a truly global picture of geosynthetic data and practice.
The website is still in its infancy and is currently undergoing an extensive redesign based on initial user feedback. Site moderator Elizabeth Peggs (elizabeth@geosynthetica.net) welcomes your inquiries on posting your company data and suggestions on maximizing the site's utility.
