Aquaculture Europe 2008
Resource Management - Natural, human and material resources for the sustainable development of aquaculture
Event Date: 9/15/2008 - 9/18/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

Organised by the European Aquaculture Society and hosted by the Polish Fisheries Association, AE2008 is the second of the "new format" Aquaculture Europe events that combine a scientific conference with a trade show. The interface between these two main features–the industry forum--will be filled by special events, including an industry or "farmers day", workshops for industry and the AE2008 student forum. As always, various social events will be a part of the Aquaculture Europe meeting. The theme of AE2008, Resource Management, addresses the natural, human and material resources for the sustainable development of aquaculture. The Water Framework Directive (2000/60/E) is the most substantial piece of water legislation ever produced by the European Commission. It requires that all inland and coastal waters within defined river basin districts must reach at least good status by 2015 and defines how this should be achieved through the establishment of environmental objectives and ecological targets for surface waters. This will be just one focus of AE2008.

Managing Water in a Climate Changing World:
Implications for Irrigation, Drainage and Flood Control
Event Date: 9/17/2008 - 9/20/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

Accelerating changes in the global climate are changing the way water is managed in the American West. Some of the resulting impacts, such as increased crop water demands, are only beginning to be felt, while others, such as earlier melting of mountain snowpacks, are already well advanced. Water managers will increasingly be confronted with decision situations where old rules and old expectations no longer apply, and new design practices, new operating rules, new management practices, and even new legislation altering water management policies and water rights, will be required. This conference is designed to help prepare water managers for these changes. The conference will acquaint managers with the methods used by scientists to project the coming water environment, the nature of the impacts on water to be expected, and the ways in which global and regional changes affect Western irrigation drainage and flood control. It will also allow managers to share the initial responses their agencies and districts have made to the changing environment and compare those responses with ones made by others. The conference will provide a forum for practitioners to share experiences and for researchers to present their recent results. It will also include a number of invited presentations by leading researchers on key issues in each of the four topical areas to acquaint conference participants with the latest thinking, methods and modeling results relating water and climate change.

11th Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes
and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst: Integrating Science and Engineering to Solve Karst Problems
Event Date: 9/22/2008 - 9/26/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

This is the 11th in this series of highly successful interdisciplinary conferences which were first organized by the Florida Sinkhole Research Institute in 1984 as a means for geologists and geographers, who study how and where karst develops and how sinkholes form, to interact with engineers, planners and others, who must apply this information to build and maintain society’s infrastructure and protect our environment. Since the fi rst meeting in 1984, these biennial conferences have grown into the single most important international professional meeting concentrating on the practical application of karst science. The goal of this conference is to share knowledge and experience among disciplines by emphasizing scientific and technological aspects of karst that have practical applications, together with case histories of those applications. Since karst topography impacts ground and surface water resources, waste disposal and management, highways and other transportation facilities, structural foundations and utilities and other infrastructure, civil, geotechnical and environmental professionals should all attend this most relevant conference. Geologists, biologists, geographers, planners, developers, government officials, and other professionals who practice in areas with karst terrain will also benefit from this sharing of knowledge.

Lifetime of Geosynthetics

Event Date: 10/22/2008 - 10/23/2008 (mm/dd/yy)

UPDATE: REGISTRATION OPEN. CLICK ON "EVENT DETAILS" BELOW FOR THE PDF DOCUMENT….Following the successful seminars on „Lifetime of Geosynthetics“ in Germany SKZ in cooperation with BMC Gulf Trading & Contracting L.L.C. organises this International conference on “Lifetime of Geosynthetics” to be held on 22 and 23 October 2008 in Dubai with Helmut Zanzinger, SKZ, Germany as the chairman. Geosynthetics are used in the construction of roadways, bridge abutments, marine structures, reservoirs, landfills and many other structures. Contractors often demand an assurance from the manufacturer that the planned structure will last for the whole life of the structure, which may be a hundred years or more. These materials, and even the polymers from which they are made, were unknown a century ago. There is therefore no experience of their use for this length of time. In fact, commercial geosynthetics have generally proved themselves durable over the fifty years since they were first installed, and over that period the quality of the products available has been improved. An understanding of the physics and chemistry of degradation has led to tests that can be performed within a reasonable time to provide an assurance that a conventional geosynthetic will last for at least 25 years in a ‘normal’ soil environment. The methods of installation are controlled and quality assurance has been improved. A more formal and comprehensive life assessment is required for a geosynthetic to be used outside these limits: for new or different polymers, higher temperatures, more aggressive environments and above all for longer lifetimes. This conference is intended to set out how to perform such an assessment. The second day of 23 October will conclude with a technical tour to the artificial lakes construction site in Dubai.
