The 2nd
IGS UK Chapter Geosynthetics Symposium and this associated publication
aim to provide an opportunity for the presentation and discussion of
recent advances in the use of geosynthetics in hydraulic engineering,
and to raise awareness of current issues. The specific objectives are
to highlight:
• Lifetime prediction of polymeric geomembranes used in dams;
• Performance of geosynthetics in filtration, erosion control and containment;
• Coastal applications (e.g. protection and formation of offshore structures);
and
• Landfill applications (e.g. leachate lagoons and basal drainage).
Although
there have been a number of conferences and meetings both in the UK and throughout
the world covering the development and use
of geosynthetic materials, it was felt by the organising committee that many
of
these
are aimed at specific sub groups of specialist practitioners and
researchers. Therefore it was considered timely to hold a symposium that
covered a range of issues relevant to those working in areas of hydraulic
engineering
(e.g. those working in coastal applications, drainage, containment
and
erosion control). This symposium is the second of a series of biennial
events organised by the IGS UK Chapter (abstracts
from the 1st IGS UK Chapter Symposium). The aim is to highlight new areas of
research and practice in the
use
of
geosynthetics,
to produce
a
body
of published papers and provide forums for discussion. In addition,
a
training presentation produced for the 7th International Geosynthetics
Conference, Nice 2002, is included to provide support for those
new to the topic.
The International
Geosynthetics Society (IGS) was founded
in Paris in 1983 and is a society that brings together all the various
geosynthetic
disciplines and interests of members from all parts of the world.
The aims of IGS are to collect and distribute knowledge about geosynthetics
and their applications by facilitating conferences and seminars
etc., to promote advancement of the state of the art of geosynthetics and
to
improve the communication and understanding of geosynthetic products
between designers, manufacturers and users of the products.
The
UK Chapter of IGS works towards these aims by organising evening
meetings,
newsletters, web site information and seminars targeted
at specific subjects. Joint evening meetings with other Engineering
Societies
ensure that the communication aspects of the Society’s aims
are fulfilled by providing technical information and experience
of geosynthetics
to the other engineering disciplines. Many members of the UK Chapter
are heavily involved in the development of harmonised European
and ISO
Standards where the combined knowledge of the industry
in the UK needs
to be represented at an international level. The Chapter is also
represented on Ground
Forum where a large number of the “ground” related
engineering disciplines are combined to provide a focused voice
at high level in the national authorities.
The editors wish to
thank the contributors for their excellent papers. Authors have
made a significant effort to produce papers
in camera-ready
format, thus enabling these proceedings to be available at the
symposium. The CD of papers is the copyright of the Authors and
E.N. Bromhead
(ISBN 0-9541992-1-9).
