Streambank Stabilization for Restoration and Flood Control Projects
12/03/2008  - 12/05/2008
This continuing education program from ASCE offers 2.1 continuing education units (CEUs) to attendees. The course provides design guidance for streambank stabilization measures for both restoration and flood control projects. Traditional 'hard' structural-type techniques such as rock riprap, gabions, and articulated concrete blocks as well as redirective techniques including bendway weirs, rock vanes, and spur dikes are presented along with information on bioengineering solutions. In this course, you will learn the applicability and limitations of the various techniques, and recognize the importance of adequate toe protection. INSTRUCTORS: Chris Bahner, P.E., D.WRE, M.ASCE; Jeffrey Bradley, Ph.D., P.E., D.WRE, F.ASCE; Thomas Grindeland, P.E., D.WRE, M.ASCE; and Hans Hadley, P.E., P.G., CFM, M.ASCE.  ID: 929

Tailings Management for Decision Makers
from the Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG)
12/03/2008  - 12/04/2008
Through an examination of risk assessment processes, a number of relevant case histories and special presentations by selected speakers illustrating worldwide practices and problems, the responsi-bilities, liabilities and special issues involved in planning, operating and decommissioning tailings storage facilities (TSFs) will be explored. The seminar will emphasise the need for the involvement and commitment of appropriate levels of management in decisions related to the management and decommissioning of TSFs. The most appropriate and cost-effective solutions for storage and decommissioning are those implemented during the planning stage for a TSF, and the most effective way to avoid costly mistakes and failures is to learn from the experiences of others. The seminar will include the following sessions: Review of relevant legislation; Liability issues and due diligence; Importance of a comprehensive management system; Lessons from international failures: case studies; The importance of water management; Environmental responsibilities; Ensuring continuing license to operate. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This two-day seminar has been developed for senior mining company personnel, mine managers and superintendents, consultants and personnel from government departments.  ID: 911

Polymer Enhancement of Erosion & Turbidity Control on Construction Sites
12/04/2008  - 12/04/2008
There is increasing pressure on construction site managers to reduce the off-site impacts on streams, lakes, and estuaries adjacent to their projects. Traditional erosion and sediment control measures, even when properly installed and maintained, will often release highly turbid water to the environment. Polymer systems developed in or adapted from water treatment, mining, and agricultural applications are becoming more available for use on construction sites. The workshop is designed to provide practical information on the use of polymers for professionals involved in designing and managing erosion, sediment, and turbidity control on construction sites.  ID: 901

Montana Stockgrowers Association 124th Annual Convention and Trade Show
12/11/2008  - 12/13/2008
The Montana Stockgrowers Association’s 124th Annual Trade Show and Convention, to be held Dec. 11-13 at the Billings Holiday Inn Grand Montana, will feature four unique Pfizer “Cattlemen’s Colleges.” Convention attendees will have the opportunity to attend two of the four colleges, held on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 13 beginning at 1:30. The colleges offer convention attendees a chance to learn important information about working and living in the livestock industry. John Paterson, PhD, will present “Five Ways to Cut Expenses and Five Areas that We Will Not Cut: Results of a Rancher Survey.” Paterson is the Extension Beef Specialist for Montana State University and focuses his research on understanding ruminant nutrition. Clint Peck, director of Montana Beef Quality Assurance (BQA), will present “Proper BQA Practices.” Peck has worked to standardize BQA efforts nationwide. This effort has resulted in increased industry-wide attention to BQA practices and increased funding for state BQA programs from national beef checkoff sources. Participants will have the opportunity to qualify their ranch for BQA certification. The Montana Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative will present a panel on Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) and Animal Feeding Operations (AFO) with an emphasis on how ranchers can work to fit CAFO/AFO regulations into their operations. Panelists will include representatives from Natural Resources Conservation Service, Montana State Department of Environmental Quality, Montana State University Extension, a livestock producer and will be moderated by Gene Surber. Karl Bareither, a wealth transfer specialist, will present “A Holistic Family Model for Planning a Family and Business Legacy.” Bareither is founder and president of Family Business Renewal System, Inc., a family business planning firm that uses a holistic process approach to transfer wealth and renew both business and family.  ID: 926

Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil
01/14/2009  - 01/14/2009
This one-day short course offers up to 7.5 professional development hours (PDHs) and encourages participants to develop an understanding of fundamental concepts as they govern the behavior of geosynthetic reinforced soil structures. Material properties are examined that govern performance, including mobilized tensile strength, soil-geosynthetic bond and strain compatibility. The course objective is to assist participants in building a framework of basic ideas which are sufficiently adaptable to accommodate the more complex problems encountered in engineering practice. It is also to illustrate, with reference to case studies, that the sensible application of simple methods can give perfectly acceptable engineering solutions. The event is organized by Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC. Drs. Jonanthan Fannin and Robert Holtz will provide the instruction.  ID: 934

The Road Summit
Delivering a 'fit for purpose' future network
01/20/2009  - 01/21/2009
Congestion continues to cripple the UK economy, with the costs estimated to exceed £12billion annually by 2010. Our highway network is grinding to a halt: clients, lobby groups, motorists and businesses are increasingly seeking novel solutions to ensure that Britain’s roads remain 'fit for purpose' in the post Eddington and Stern age. Can you deliver? NCE’s Roads Summit expands on the scope of previous events and will look at the UK’s road infrastructure from both macro and micro perspectives. You will come away from this event with a holistic vision of the highway network: from procurement, design and construction to maintenance, management and operation.  ID: 924
